New distribution warehouse for Schenker – Turku strengthens its logistical status18.04.2007 Turku’s logistical position was further strengthened as Schenker Cargo Oy introduced its large new distribution warehouse at the Port of Turku.
Built as a joint project by Schenker Cargo Oy and the Port of Turku, the warehouse has 24,000 square metres of floor space, and an additional 10,000 is already being planned. This modern distribution warehouse offers options for a variety of operations. In addition to ordinary warehousing, some goods may be for further processing and there are separate areas for dangerous goods and fragile IT equipment. The space is divided into seven areas, and the temperature can be adjusted in each as per the requirements of the goods stored. Schenker chose to build the distribution warehouse in Turku as the city is increasingly seen as the gateway to Scandinavia and sea connections to Sweden are shorter from Turku than, for example, from Helsinki. Schenker also considers Turku’s direct rail connection to Russia very important – the new warehouse is in fact equipped with a unique double track system that allows trains with different gauges to travel directly from the port to the warehouse without bogie changing.
The new distribution warehouse significantly enlarges the capacity of the Port of Turku, and transport volumes are expected to rise by as much as 10 per cent.
