Direct flights from Turku to Budapest and a new connection to Riga start in the spring

09.12.2009

Budget airline Wizz Air has announced that it will offer two new direct connections from Turku as of spring 2010. Flights to Budapest commence on 15th March and to Riga on 28th March, twice weekly to each destination with tickets on sale now.

“Wizz Air’s growth is the result of long term co-operation,” says Kimmo Holopainen, Business Development Manager responsible for the low cost airline sector at Finavia.

Wizz Air is the largest low fare, low cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe and operates a young fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft (passenger capacity nearly 200) from six hubs in Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania on close to 100 routes. Wizz Air offers direct connections from Gdansk to around 20 destinations in e.g. France, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Spain, Sweden and throughout the UK.

The total number of direct flights available to and from Turku has grown considerably in the past 18 months. In addition to the more traditional destinations of Helsinki, Stockholm and Copenhagen, Turku now offers direct connections to Oulu, Gdansk, Riga, Tallinn and from spring 2010 also to Budapest.

In terms of Southwest Finland’s business policy development, new flight connections are particularly important to the area’s large companies, adding new routes for business travellers and offering enhanced opportunities for the movement of labour. The tourism industry benefits from the expanding potential to develop and market new products. And the greater number of connections also serves Turku’s status as the European Capital of Culture 2011.
