Finavia annually picks the Airport of the Year in Finland. The primary selection criteria that won Turku the accolade in 2011 were the airport’s first-rate customer service and careful consideration for airline and passenger needs. Customers found Turku Airport to be one of the best in Finland, especially in terms of functionality and its approach to service.
Some 360,000 passengers passed through Turku Airport in 2010, making it the fourth busiest in Finland. In terms of cargo volumes running at around 7,000 tonnes it was topped only by Helsinki Airport. The volume of cargo transported through Turku Airport has increased rapidly in recent years.
Turku has a long history as a centre for air traffic. Finland’s first airport for civil aviation was opened in Artukainen, Turku in 1935. The airport has operated at its current location since 1955.
